history at Vines Group

Where it all began

1885

John Coombs Snr started his business in Guildford as a blacksmith and carriage company.

1900s

Coombs' sons join ther father & expand into motor vehicles.

1920s

By early 1920s Coombs and Sons was dealing with cars, coaches and had a reputation as body fabricators and painters of the early motor coaches.

1931

The business became a Limited Company and held franchises for Buck, Rover and Wolseley motorcars

1940

The founders grandson, joined John Coombs Serin the business and developed the Jaguar franchise & Jaguar racing. Daimler was added in 1961.

1975

The company established its Service and Parts operation

in Slyfield Green and were distributors for Jaguar, Rover, Triumph and Unipart. These were sold in 1979 to Wadham Stringer

1980

1 January 1980 Coombs were appointed a BMW Car and motorcycle dealer.

1995

The Shelley Family joined Coombs of Guildford as co-owners.

1999

Coombs acquired Vines of Sevenoaks and Vines of Gatwick-the group changed it's name to Vines.

2001

The Group exchanged the Sevenoaks dealership for Vines of Redhill, Vines Group appointed as a MINI franchise dealer group.

2006

John Tenner retires Sean Kelly appointed Managing Director

2011

Vines Group awarded BMW franchise agreement.

2015

Vines were the 75th automotive retail group in the UK. Vines awarded both MINI Marketing retailer and BMW i retailer of the year UK awards.

2017

Vines awarded BMW UK Marketing Retailer of the year.

2018

Vines Ltd shortlisted as top 25 out of 72,000 companies, in Surry, Vines awarded both MINI Marketing retailer & BMW retailer of the year UK awards.

2020

40th year franchise anniversary with further business expansion on the horizon
